Everlane is on my shit list.
Some thoughts on responsible shopping, a celebration of worker-owned blogs and...my purchases :)
FRIENDS it has been a while! We’ll get to all the things I’ve purchased in the last few months, but first let’s talk about Responsible Shopping. Something that’s been on my mind a lot (especially since March) is how retail companies treat their workers and what it means to be a responsible shopper.
Let’s talk about two retailers I regularly link to in this newsletter. It’s news to absolutely no one that Amazon is evil. They purposely create waste, treat their workers like shit, and are really good at dodging taxes. And guess who’s THRIVING during the pandemic!
Then there’s Everlane, who built their entire brand on appearing to be ethical and sustainable, yet instead of recognizing their workers’ union they fired them the first chance they got and blamed it on COVID. Even worse, the New York times reported that an internal investigation at Everlane uncovered several instances of racism, harassment and discrimination within the company.
This is just the very tip of the iceberg, and it’s not to shame or judge anyone for shopping at these places, but this is just a peek into what’s been on my mind over the last few months. Moving forward, you won’t be seeing the following retailers in this newsletter, as I’ve either stopped buying from them completely or am weaning myself off of them: Amazon, Everlane, Anthropologie and ASOS. [And full disclosure I still have a Prime membership, but actively working on weaning myself off of it. We’re all trying the best we can!!]
Before we move on to links, I have a PSA: THE BLOGS ARE BACK IN TOWN!!!!
Ex-Splinter writers have started their own publication on Substack called Discourse Blog. It’s worth a read and your money IMO! Same with the ex-Deadspin crew, who launched Defector last week. Also Diet Prada, my fav source for fashion/influencer industry bullshit behavior, announced a Patreon blog last week.
Recent purchases
A BUNCH of shit at the Dr. Jart online sample sale, which is still going on! I got a few jelly masks (hydro and soothing), two dark circle eye patches, two hydro rubber masks and a peeling solution. (PS, for anyone dealing with redness, their Cicapair line is great and there are several in the sample sale!)
This amazing dish rack from Food52. Trust me: put yourself on the restock notifications list for this, especially if you have a useless side sink like me.
This 43 inch round mirror from IKEA for $80. This is extremely inexpensive for a round mirror this size. There are a few other shapes in this line with simple frames and they’re all great!
So many of these fly traps. The fly situation in my backyard is completely insane, I think because of all the overgrowth in my neighbors yard. I’ve become a fly trap freak. These really work and are easy to dispose of. Double bag them and remember to put them far away from where you want to hang out because they stink.
I got a bunch of stuff from Girlfriend Collective. During a sale, I got a pair of high waist leggings in grey (my third pair, these are great). When they released socks and underwear, I got a few pairs of the quarter crew sock and I LOVE them. They’re weirdly supportive and perfect to wear with birks or clogs. They should be restocking soon. The underwear was fine! I also caved to the bike shorts trend and got two pairs: one in lime green which I ended up hating in person and one in black that I love.
After a DM convo with the Ilana Kohn Instagram confirmed a denim version of their tuck romper was coming, I started setting aside some $$$ for its release. Then it dropped and I swooped in and I love it!! Listen, I know $300+ is insane for a romper but I wear my other IK pieces all the time and they’ve aged and washed well.
I bought a few more of my favorite bralettes that I’ve honestly just been wearing as tops for the last few months. I got these cloud-shaped sunglasses too and I love them!!
This stretchy one-size bathing suit from Youswim in “Wasabi” because I’m extra.
I got one of those blow dry brushes and I LOVE it!
Big Friendship by Aminatou Sow and Ann Friedman. I really loved this book! I read it twice!!
Also…uh…I bought a car…..in May….lol…..beep beep….
What I Didn’t Buy
Girlfriend Collective bike unitard: only because its sold out! I WANT IT!
Sheets! Im in desperate need of literally just a fitted sheet! I think I might just get this one? Anyone feel strongly about their sheets? I want like a geometric sitch.
These great wide-leg linen shorts made by one of the many designers Danielle Bernstein (AKA @weworewhat) has ripped off :)
I love these rugs but cant decide on a color/pattern!
This dress looks so comfortable! And it’s on sale!
