This newsletter is months late and here are some reasons why:
I told myself I could not write this until I finished doing my taxes.
Rats ate my car again.
Kendall Jenner and Bad Bunny are dating??
I saw a moth in my apartment.
I do not allow myself to write this newsletter before I’ve finished my Dwell column, which is usually down to the wire (sorry megan!!)
My rent went up 25% (yes, legally)
Tom Sandoval cheated on Ariana with Raquel and Tom Schwartz knew about it and acted as a cover for months.
But today (or yesterday, since this is scheduled), the sun set after 7pm and I found the strength to Do The Work and here we are. Let’s get into it.
What I bought (just the highlights)
Leesa mattress: I’d been casually shopping for a new mattress for about 3 years. I’d start the search, get overwhelmed and quit a few times per year. The search ramped up late last year and my whining in the group chat finally paid off: My friend Libby sent me this Wirecutter tweet featuring an incredible deal on the Leesa hybrid mattress. I bought it on my phone with Apple Pay while boarding the subway. I was thrilled with the price and excited to graduate to a Queen-sized bed, but a new problem emerged: I needed a new bed frame. Which brings me to my next purchase…
Thuma bed: I’m not going to bore you with the details about how I hemmed and hawed over this fucking bed frame. The ads followed me all around the internet and I finally gave in. I was Thuma-pilled. I love this bed frame! And I love the mattress! Highly recommend both.
I bought the shoes. I will explain! But first, please look at them. This moment has been building since I started this newsletter in 2018. The OGs know.
A few months ago I realized that I had accumulated some points in the Shop app, which you may have seen as a payment option for online stores that use Shopify. When I have the option, I always use Shop to check out online because I like that they offer one feed of my shipments and live alerts. (This is not an ad! I wish it was!) Anyway, you get points with each purchase that you can use towards purchases within the Shop app. There’s not a ton of merchants selling via this app, but Suzanne Rae is one of them. So I combined my $100 of shop points with the 10% off newsletter signup and bought the most expensive shoes I’ve ever owned. I panicked about this purchase for 24 hours but they are beautiful and perfect.
A whole new skincare routine: My skin has been on a rollercoaster with my hormones over the last 1.5 years. I had an excellent facial at Sofie Pavitt Studio last month and my esthetician, Sarah, suggested I strip down to a very basic routine until I can clear up some of the bumpiness on my chin. She suggested Face Reality products which are all acne-safe, so I got this bundle (15% off with HELLOFR) to pair with their mandelic acid I was already using. I used Sofie Pavitt’s ingredient checker and found that most of the products I was using contained pore-clogging ingredients. Which is not necessarily bad, I can work some of them back in once my skin returns to normal, but for now I’m setting them to the side.
A partially new makeup routine: I tend to keep my makeup pretty light. On most days I just wear Glossier mascara and Kaja’s eye brightener. I got a skin tint and blush from Tower28, which also makes this great toner spray that I love. All of Tower 28’s products are non-comedogenic, so they’re safe for my temporarily angry skin.
Let’s take a moment to talk about some good smells
I was sent a sample of Yield’s Palo Santo candle and it smells so good and burns SO evenly. Everything on their site is 20% off right now so I’m restocking.
I wear this Dedcool perfume every day, either on its own or layered with another scent. I’m kind of obsessed with it so I decided to try their laundry detergent and I really like it. It’s a light scent but very fresh.
I was sent an Aromatech diffuser to test last month. Here’s my take: Once you set this thing up on a schedule, it does make your apartment smell very nice and it takes a while to get through the scented oil, which surprised me. It’s on sale right now but it’s definitely a bit pricey. If this thing were $100 I’d say hell yeah.
Tabs I bravely closed
Many people are saying we should put all the men on the moon.
I fell in love with this Isabel Marant coat at Woodbury Commons in January. I saw it online for cheaper (but still $500!!) than it was at the outlet but I waited too long (again, $500) and it sold out. I still think about her.
I really like this bath mat.
Will these sparkly sponges make washing dishes fun? It’s possible.
ok, CUTE!?
Do you have a silk pillowcase? My favorite one is 20% this weekend. My favorite hair towel is included in the same sale.
I bought The Shoes
love it!
