My brief moment as a sneakerhead
Plus: Good Memorial day sales and why did no one tell me about tubing mascara??
I dipped a toe into sneakerhead waters last month when the Nike x Bode collection was unveiled. I’m not much of a sneaker person or even really a Bode person, for that matter. (I’m more into Bode’s retail interior design than its clothing. What can I say? I love a dried hydrangea.) The sneakers, which I first saw on Kaia Gerber, called out to me. I set a reminder for 5:50pm on April 18th, and when the time came I opened up a browser tab and gave it a shot. “They’re going to sell out immediately,” Josh told me. I don’t know why I didn’t believe him, but he was right. The site crashed and then the shoes were gone.
Bode’s Instagram post announcing the sale became the meeting place for all the other people who, like me, had been able to add shoes to their cart but not check out. With over 500 comments and 13,000 likes, it was Bode’s biggest post, engagement-wise, in a while. Just not for the best reason.
I struck out again a few weeks later when Nike did their own release. The sneakers of course instantly appeared on StockX for hundreds over retail price. I already waited in two virtual lines for these shoes, I wont further debase myself by paying an insane markup. Here are some other sneakers I’m considering instead:
An Irrational Element’s sculpture sneaker
J Crew’s field sneakers, which are on sale this weekend
Nike’s field general, though I don’t love the stark black & white contrast
Everlane’s tread-bare sneakers
Other suggestions welcome!

Worthwhile Memorial Day sales
Get yourself a new duvet cover at Dusen Dusen. Everything is 25% off with code TOUCHGRASS
Everything at Everlane is 25% off. I share this only because their great gardener overalls are back in stock (and I bought a pair!)
Everything at Ilana Kohn is 30% off with code SUMMER30. I love their pants and jumpsuits and this print.
Offe Market (like a TJ Maxx for Cool Brands often mentioned in this newsletter) is 20% off with code WELOVEU. This Ganni trench is very cool.
Everything at Subset is 30-50% off. They make GREAT underwear. The hi-rise briefs and thongs are perfect.
Why didn’t anyone tell me about tubing mascara?
I picked up a tube of No. 7’s tubing mascara after seeing a makeup artist use it in a TikTok. I’ve been used Glossier’s Lashslick for years but something about the last couple of tubes I bought felt different. It was smudging more, not really holding a curl and worst of all drying up really fast. I really like a low-key mascara, and I feel that most of what’s on the market is a bit to spidery for me. No 7’s tubing mascara is great. Not too thick, not spidery and has great hold and lift. It doesn’t smudge at all, which I love, and it’s very easy to remove with micellar water. BEWARE: It does come off in little strips that look suspiciously like eyelashes, which sent me into a panic the first time I took it off. Here’s a link but you can definitely find this at your local pharmacy.
